Beefore the Swarm

Murmurs in My Mind

✏️ This book started as a murmur in my head — eight years before it ever reached a notebook.
Then, a scribble in a daybook.
It sat for a further 12 years.

Who’s going to read it?
Is there anything here?
Yes, I’ve got some own-invented stuff — things people already use, I know they work — but well, er…

Then bees.
A swarm.
A spiral.
And something began to move.

Here’s how it happened.

For a long time, this was just an idea.
I’d toyed with writing a book. Even considered Top Trumps-style cards.
But every version felt like another “Here’s a book…” — and not the right kind.

Then I saw a picture of a bee in Australia.
Turns out, when it gets really hot, nectar ferments.
Drunk bees get stopped at the hive… by actual bouncer bees.

It cracked me up — and made me think.

Then I remembered a school trip to Manchester. We watched a documentary about bees at the cinema — how they worked together, adapted, organised.

Booooooom.

That was it.
Bees as characters. Bouncers, workers, queen…

And then — I dusted off an old notebook. (Yes, I really did have one.)
I won’t tell you the title. I cringe now.
But flicking through my daybooks — notes on what I’d coached others in —the structure of what was to bee content began to form.

And there’s a deeper reason too.
Without bees, humans don’t exist.

I know that message is already out there — and rightly so —but if this book helps spread that awareness even a little further…

breeeelliant.

Oh, and let’s be honest — I love a good dad joke.
So the chance to throw in some bee gags?
Not lost on me either.
